Abraham Verghese is a physician author who was born in 1955. He is also a professor for the Theory and Practice of Medicine at Stanford University Medical School and Senior Associate Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. He is well known for his three bestselling book; two memoirs and a novel. In the year 2011, writer Abraham was elected to be a member of the Institute of Medicine. Writer Abraham was born in Ethiopia to the parents from Kerala, India; who had worked as teachers. He was raised as a Malankara Orthodox Syrian Christian. His first book was published in the year 2009, titled ‘Cutting for Shore’. In the year 2010, Random House published the paperwork of the book and since then he has risen in the bestseller charts. It has been on the New York Times list for over two years.

Author Abraham began his medical training in Ethiopia but then was interrupted during the civil unrest there when the Emperor was deposed and a military government took over. He worked as an orderly for a year before coming back to India where he completed his medical studies at Madras College in Madras. In many of his work, he refers to his time working as an orderly in a hospital in America as deeply influential in confirming his desire to finish his medical training.

After finishing his medical degree from Madras University in 1979, and then completing his internship, author Abraham returned to the States as one of the hundreds of foreign medical graduate. He did his residency in a brand-new program in Johnson City, Tennessee which is affiliated with East Tennessee State University. He was there from 1980 to 1983 and was successful in securing a coveted fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine in 1983. Writer Abraham worked there for two years at Boston City Hospital and there he saw early signs of the urban epidemic of HIV in that city.

Author Abraham was exhausted from his current work, with his first marriage under strain and by then having begun write seriously, he thought of taking a break. He applied to the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa and was accepted. There he honed his writing skills and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1991. After that, he accepted a position as Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Texas Tech Health Science Center in El Paso.

During these days only he wrote and published his first book, ‘My Own Country: A Doctor’s Story’, about his experience in East Tennessee, but also pondering these of displacement, Diaspora, responses to foreignness and the many individuals and families affected by the AIDS epidemic. This book was one of five chosen as Best Book of the Year by Times Magazine and it was later made into a movie by Mira Nair with Lost star Naveen Andrews playing his role. Writer Abraham Cutting for Stone has remained a #1 bestseller on the Independent Booksellers list and high on the ‘New York Times’ fiction and ‘USA Today’ bestsellers lists.
