Narendra Damodardas Modi is an Indian politician who was born on 17 September 1950 to a family of grocers in Vadnagar in Mehsana district of Gujarat, India. He is the 14th chief minister of the state of Gujarat. Being a member of the Bharatiya Janta Party, and the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP, Modi led National Democratic Alliance in the 2014 Indian General Elections. In the successful 1995 an 1998 Gujarat state election campaigns, Narendra Modi was a key strategist for the BJP and was a major campaign figure in the 2009 general elections and eventually won by the Indian Nation Congress. Narendra Damodardas Modi first became the chief minister of Gujarat in 2001 when Keshubhai Patel, his predecessor resigned. He became the longest serving Chief Minister in the history of Gujarat in July 2007 as he had been in power for 2,063 days continuously. At present he is serving his fourth term as Chief Minister. Modi is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) in is described as a Hindu nationalist by media, scholars and himself. Within India and internationally he is a controversial figure as his administration has been criticized for the incidents surrounding the 2002 Gujarat violence. His administration has also been criticized for failing to make a significant positive impact upon the human development of the state. For creating an environment for a high rate of economic growth in Gujarat, he has been praised for his economic policies. To Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his wife Heeraben, Narendra Damodardas Modi was the third if six children. Financial problems gathered his family and he started helping his father to sell tea at Vadnagar railway station. He finished schooling in Vadnagar. He was described as an average student but he was a keen debater and had interest in theatre as told by his teacher.

Modi’s marriage was arranged according to the Ghanchi caste when he was a child. By the time he was 13, he was engaged to Jshodaben Chimanlal and the couple was married by the time he was 18. The marriage didn’t work out as Modi had different way of spending his life. After traveling for two years probably in Himalayas, he resumed selling tea upon his return. He later on started working in the staff canteen of Gujarat State Road Transportation until he became a full time propagandist (pracharak) of the RSS in 1970. From the age of eight he had been involved as a volunteer in RSS. He also came in contact with Vasant Gajendragadkar and Nathalal Jaghda, leaders of the Jan Sangh who later founded the BJP’s Gujarat state unit. After receiving some RSS training in Nagpur, Modi was given charge of Sangh’s student wing. A graduate in political science from Delhi University, Modi remained a pracharak in the RSS and completed his Master’s Degree in political science from Gujarat University simultaneously. 

After the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971, Modi formally joined the RSS. Indira Gandhi, the prime minister of India declared a state of emergency in 1975 and jailed political opponents. Modi disguised himself and went underground in Gujarat. Apart from all the danger he printed and sent booklets against the central government to Delhi. Modi was assigned to the BJP by the RSS in 1985 and he also participated in the movement against the emergency under Jayaprakash Narayan. In November 1995 Modi was elected as National Secretary of BJP. He was transferred to New Delhi as General Secretary and was asked to look after the party’s activities in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh in 1998. In 2001, when Keshubhai Patel’s health was failing BJP’s national leaders sought a new candidate for the post of chief minister. Modi was chosen as a replacement as he had aired his misgivings about Patel’s administration. On 7 October 2001, Modi was appointed as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Modi’s government has worked to brand Gujarat as a state of dynamic development, economic growth and prosperity, using the slogan “Vibrant Gujarat”. Narendra Modi had a positive vision to bring out the best from everything. During late 2011 and early 2012, Modi undertook a series of fasts as part of a Sadhbhavna Mission (Goodwill Mission), meant to reach out to the Muslim community in Gujarat. His motive was to strengthen Gujarat’s environment of peace, unity and harmony.

In the 2012 Gujarat legislative assembly elections, Modi won from the constituency of Maninagar with a majority of 86,373 votes over Sanjay Bhatt’s wife, Shweta who was contesting for the Indian national congress. The BJP won 115 seats of the 182 seats continuing the majority that the party has had throughout Modi’s tenure.

Modi had been a significant figure in the 2009 national election campaign. He participated in 2014 general election and was supported by many famous people. He is a crowd puller and his speeches are worth listening. He has received many awards such as Gujarat Ratna by Shri Poona Gujarati Bandhu Samiti, e-ratna award by Computer Society of India. He has been termed as best Chief Minister. He has done a lot for Gujarat, we have seen his work. Now its time for India to change, give him a chance and see what he can do.
